Traditional small scale self-sufficient farm with vegetable and animals
Jönköping
Allmogegården farm is a small-scale organic farm with a focus on self-sufficiency instead of seeking production and trying to make money. We are trying our best to create a sustainable livelihood and habitat for us who lives on the farm so we can live in harmony and unison with nature. We grow vegetables, bread grain, and feed for the animals. We have cows, sheep, hens, horses, cats, and a dog. It is very important to us that animals live their lives in the most natural way possible. The farm is surrounded by beautiful environment with nature all around. If you come and stay with us you will experience traditional farming and how it is to live on a small farm with a focus on self-sufficiency. You can learn about cultivating the land, taking care of the animals, building fences, growing vegetables, dairy work, baking, preparing and preserving food, old traditional farming technic, forestry, different kind of handicrafts (depending of the season of course) .
We want that the volunteers who comes to us stays for at least 1 month. For us, the most important is that the people that come to us are positive, open-minded, and responsible people that are really interested in sustainable living and small-scale farming. To enjoy your stay with us, you must enjoy working with your body outside and not be afraid to get your hands dirty. You must also enjoy working and living in a collective community and be able to take responsibility and show consideration. As a volunteer, you work 6 hours a day 5 days a week.
The daily schedule on the farm looks like this:
7:00-9:00 Responsibility time*
9:00-10.30 Breakfast and morning meeting
10.30-13.30 Morning program*
13.30-15.00 Lunch and break (the volonteers take turn i cooking and preparing lunch)
15:00-16:00 Responsibility time*
Dinner: The volunteers cook/ warm their own dinner often in groups.
*Responsibly time: When we do the daily shores like household shores, and gardening , taking care of the horses, cows, sheep, and birds. * Morning program: We doing the other work that needs to be done on the farm. What we do depends very much on the season.
Organic methods: We are using traditional small-scale and ecological methods. We are inspired by the methods that were used in area before 1950. We work with a lot of old fashion methods and by hand with manual labor, we use our horses for some work and also with our old small tractors. We also imply permaculture methods.
Good things to know:
- We have in total 14 small rooms for volunteers. Some of them have two beds in. The beds have pillow and blanket. You can borrow sheet and towel if you want.
-The food we eat is mostly produced on the farm and we try to buy as little as possible.
-We have only outdoor toilets.
-We have two showers that everyone share.
-Good Internet Connection
- Good things to bring: environmentally friendly hygiene products, slippers, rubber boots, working gloves, a hat or cap in summer, headlamp in the winter.

I stayed at Allmogegården for two months and had a really wonderful time. There are so many different activities happening on the farm, you could stay here for a year and still be learning new things. More than any other farm I've volunteered at, Maria and Bengt seem to have set their farm up specifically with the WWOOFers' experience in mind; the farmwork is very well organized, the work is never too difficult but is always meaningful, and there is a really strong sense of community living with the other volunteers. Thank you Maria and Bengt for such a great experience, and I hope I am able to return to Allmogegården in the future!

We spent four weeks at Maria and Bengt's farm, and it was an incredible time! We got to work on the farm with 15 other people, and there was truly something for everyone, from collecting branches, building houses, and making cheese to games and movie nights. We were also lucky enough to go horse riding, and it was wonderful! There are also different groups, and Maja and I ended up in the animal group. We both already miss the chickens! Everyone was so lovely, and it was fantastic getting to know everyone a little better. It's amazing what Maria and Bengt have built and how much heart they put into it. A big thank you also to Henk, who was always there for us. We highly recommend staying longer than four weeks, but then saying goodbye is even harder, of course.
Thank you so much for the wonderful time!

Staying at Allmogegården has been one of the best decisions of my adult life.
The dedication, kindness and generosity that Maria and Bengt have for their community, land and animals is stunning. I am very happy to have experienced working and living on a self-sufficient farm. So much that I have applied to an organic farming school !
I mainly worked with the "big animals": cows, calves, horses and sheep/lamb. I had no prior experience with this type of work, but I realized that it is really rewarding. I never knew that cows and horses have such huge personalities !
Working with the animals I learned to care for, and milk the cows, to take care of and ride the horses, caring for calves, driving a tractor, setting up electrical fences and a lot more.
During the summer months we worked very much with taking hay into the barn, it is hard work, but quite fun when done collectively, while listening to swedish radio (Star FM <3)
Working with Bengt the tasks are endless, there will always be something to take care of: weeding, moving something, setting up fences, building, digging, you name it.
With Maria I mostly partaked in building a new large woodshed out of timber from their land. This was very interesting as we were also reusing timber from an old log house.
At Allmogegården you will always meet interesting people from all over the world, have a structured day and week, eat delicious food, be challenged, and learn lots.
I am definitely coming back in the future !

What an incredible month I spent in Allmogegården !
Bengt and Maria are wonderful hosts, you feel included and welcome from the get go. I got to work in a very beautiful part of the swedish countryside, besides around 15 other volonteers. I mostly worked with Bengt, who's always happy to explain how everything works. Now that I'm back at home, I only want to go back and see how the farm evolves around the year. Thank you so so much and see you next time !

July 2025
I spent three and a half weeks at Allmogegården through June and July and it was a truly amazing experience. Though it was my first time ever WWOOFing, I never felt out of place. In large part this was down to Maria and Bengt being incredibly friendly and supportive and with roughly 15-18 other volunteers at any one time, there’s also a very strong sense of community on the farm. I can consider myself lucky for having the opportunity to get to know so many kind and interesting new people from around the world.
Responsibilities are as outlined in the farm’s description and I spent half of my time primarily looking after the gardens and half my time primarily looking after the chickens and ducks. The responsibilities that you may be expected to do from 10:30-13:30 included working with hay, weeding, harvesting berries, cooking lunch for everybody and construction work. I felt very much able to develop new skills through this work and though it can feel a little hard at times, it was never not rewarding. When not working, there was also the opportunity to explore the local area’s forests, lakes and scenic towns with swims in Lake Vättern a particular highlight.
All in all, I would highly recommend other people to stay at Allmogegården. The fact that lots of volunteers choose return to the farm I think says it all!
