We are Jonas and Ylva and we bought the farm in 2014. We have two daughters that no longer live on the farm but visits regularly. Up to when we bought the farm we had stayed in the city of Alingsås and we had no previous experience in owning a farm. After coming in contact with the Transition movement in 2009 we realised that the world need more farmers and from then on we have practiced by keeping bees in the city, growing vegetables on an allotment and so on. In 2014 we finally found the farm we were looking for. Since then we have been working hard to put the place in state. We have organized several courses when we have needed knowledge ourselves. We also have people coming to help us on workdays and on weekends. We have restored a small house on the farm, in which wwoofers visiting us are staying. We have also restored an old circus wagon to be able to accommodate more wwoofers since we have had to turn so many people down because of lack of accommodation. We are looking for wwoofers that want to learn how to run a farm and are really interested in the work not the ones that just want some time away from their ordinary life. Maybe you see yourself as a future farmer or vegetable grower. We are good at explaining why we do as we do and can tell you a lot about the misstakes we have done. . We are aiming at a diversified farm with a lot of different products as honey, berries, fruit, vegetables, meat, eggs and so on. We learn as we do things. Most days both or one of us are at home working with you but sometimes you might be working on your own. There are a lot to do on a farm and we will mainly need help in the vegetable garden, in the forest garden, with outdoor painting and with fencing for the animals. We work long days that starts at seven o´clock and ends late at night but we will expect woofers to work between 8 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday. We will eat lunch together but woofers will make breakfast and evening-meal by themselves in the wwoof house. (we supply the groceries) In your spare time you can go by bus to town. (30 minutes to Alingsås and from there 40 minutes to Gothenburg or 3 hour to Stockholm) In our area you can go biking, camping, canoeing or swimming. There is a lake four kilometers away from the farm. You can borrow tent, canoe and bikes from us. We have had wwoofers during several seasons and we really like it. The wwoofers who visited us seems to have been pleased with their stay as you can see from the reviews we have got. We prefer wwoofers that want to stay for a longer period of time. The only problem we have had has been with wwoofers who requested hosting and then did not reply or arrive. This caused some problems since we then denied other wwoofers who had requested to come. We do not like to turn people down especially if it´s not necessary. Therefore - if you get accepted and do not respond to the answer we write to you we will cancel the agreement after two weeks. So check this site for answers if you request to come to Östängs farm. We also want you to send us a phone number so we can keep in contact with each other. As soon as you have booked your ticket to come here it would be good if you told us so we know that you will really show up. If you have to cancel we please ask you to do that as early as possible so we can give your place to someone else. We want to be able to accept as many wwoofers as possible. Welcome! Organic methods: We do not use any pesticides or chemical fertilizers. We try, once we have dug the beds, not to dig but to cover beds or to have something growing in them. We have an apple garden and a forest garden and more and more berry bushes. We have grazing sheep and ducks and chicken running around at the farm.   Certifications: We only sell directly to customers and they know how we work without us being certified. Current projects: Take care of animals. Seeding, weeding, planting, transplanting in the vegetable garden. Planting trees. Painting house and barn. Fencing. Maintainance.  Internet access available. If you want to see more pictures from the wwoofhouse please visit http://ostangsgard.se/wwoofhuset/ Some wwoofers will stay in our wwoof-wagon but all have access to the kitchen, bathroom and living-area in the wwoofhouse.

Go to the small town Alingsås. From there you take bus 541 heading for Sollebrunn and get of at Trålanda.

This was my first wwoof experience. I decided to stay here for the whole season althoug I had no Idea what i got myselfe into. It turned out, this was the best farm I could choose. My best expectations were even exceeded. I enjoyed every single day and learned so much about farmlife. If you want to learn something about vegetable growing and selling, animal keeping, sweden and there habits like fika and in general how to run a farm, this is the place for you. There is a reason why so many wwoofers are returning. If you need anything don't hesitate to ask Ylva and Jonas and they will try to make it possible. The only "bad" thing i can say is, I dont know if I can go wooffig somewhere else because it will be verry hard for other farms to catch up with this one. Thank you for everything.

Hi Ylva and Jonas, thank you again for the unforgetable time at yours. I've been to Östäng Gård for four weeks and I would have loved to stay longer. I would definetly recommend to stay atleast a month to really get the hang of everything. The WWOOF-house is great to connect between the wwoofers and enjoy evenings together. I'm curious to see how the house will look like with all the improvements Jonas has in his mind. I've been to Alingsås by bike, which is doable but can be quiet hilly and on the highway not very secure. There are long parts of the highway that don't have bikelane. But, I definetly recommend the city. Also, I went for a weekend trip to Gothenburg. Starting right after lunch on friday was very convenient for the bus, though to be fair except this bus on friday every hour, there is not much personal transport during the weekend in swedish summerbreak. You can call a transport by västtrafik but that can be hard. Also, they operate in limited timeframes and not on sunday. So I decided to take a taxi from Alingsås. I strongly advice you to look for a different way to come back, because I ended up paying 900 Skr for the ride. Östäng Gård was one of my best experiences in live and I beg you all to try aswell.

During my stay at Östängs Gård I learned much about machines, animals, vegetables, people, and other things. I arrived on a Saturday, and Ylva collected me in Vårgårda because the bus connection to the farm is poor, especially on weekends. The everyday work is usually not too hard, every task is explained if you do it the first time and also the second and third time if needed. We weeded nearly every day, which was an easy but not very interesting task. But also planted and harvested. Trimming fern or the grass under the fences was a task I really liked, and most of the time, there are several tasks to choose from. On the really hot days, we still worked, but they tried to give us easy tasks in the shade, and sometimes we got ice cream. You should be able to resist some rain, but if it gets too heavy, there will be work inside. There are several lakes you can go to after work, take a bike or walk around. But most afternoons, I've been in the Pub and made some music. There are guitars, drums, a keyboard, and a bass guitar. On weekends, you can take a bike, go to Alingsås or Göteborg or spend a night somewhere in a windshield or tent. Jonas and Ylva will always help if there's a problem, and even if you do something wrong accidentally, they will not be angry with you. I also have to mention the really good food Ylva prepares. And there is always enough of it. Thank you very much, Ylva, Jonas, Ina, Tilda and Ida, for the great time at Östäng.

You’ve got a friend in me. Tusen tack, vi ses igen!

This was honestly one of the best months of my life. Ylva and Jonas really made it such a positive experience and it was so interesting to see how they run their farm. As this is my first Wwoofing experience, I can't express enough how lucky I was to have been with them. I feel as though my time on the farm has opened my eyes to a lot in my life and I will definitely be bringing back as much of the experience as possible. Work days are actually so enjoyable no matter what the task or weather. The way they break up the work also keeps things nice and fresh so you're never too bored of any singular task. Saying this, some tasks are never ending, such as weeding, but even that feels so satisfying to finish a bed. The animals on the farm are also a great source of joy and it's always fun interacting with them! There's also plenty of opportunities to go exploring! The town can be accessed by bus/taxi and they have some bikes that can be used to explore the local area! There are some beautiful lakes to go swimming in and a few nature trails to hike through the forests if you like a nature vibe like I do! (Read the red book for the full guide if you end up going here!)

Stay here if you can!!! I have been WWOOFing around the world and this has been my favorite stay so far. There are so many wonderful things about this place. Ylva and Jonas are amazing hosts—you will stay well fed with freshly baked goods and delicious meals and you will learn a lot about farming and life in general. They do a great job at giving you a variety of tasks and structuring the day so that you never feel bored or tired. You have the afternoons and weekends free where you can take bikes out to explore the beautiful countryside, jump in the nearby lakes, or explore the local cities. I stayed here with 3 other WWOOFers and it was lovely getting to know people from across the world as well. I felt like I was a kid again at American summer camp—so much fun and such great memories. Thank you, Ylva and Jonas!!!
