We are a small scale and diverse family farm in the countryside of Alvesta in Småland. The family consists of Mimmi, Nicklas and our three kids Balder (7 y), Idun (3,5) and Torin (1). Nicklas has an employment outside the farm 4 days a week, while I (Mimmi) are working home and take care about the daily farm chores, child care, gardening etc.
This season and the one to come we mainly focus on self -sufficency at the farm. Before we have been running a small business for about 7 years, growing vegetables for a local market, but we are replanning and are going to start again when our youngest have grown a bit.
We have several different projects underway on the farm, for example our forest garden with fruit trees, berry bushes, perennial vegetables, a new green house that is half ready and hopefully will be finished sometime this summer. We are over-all self-sufficient in vegetables, meat, berrys etc. . We bake, preserve and process a lot. We also make our own yoghurt and in periods also cheese with milk from a neghboring farm.
We have about 20 ha of forest where we harvest firewood in the winter. We have start to convert some of the land to forest-pasture and food-producing trees.
Animals are a central part in the farm for grassing, landscape management, manure and products like eggs, meat and hopefully also milk in the future. We have a few houshold cows,, about 40 hens, cat and two dags.
Depending on interest, knowledge and season the tasks will vary.
During april-sept you will participate in various tasks in the vegetable garden and forest garden like
- planting
- sowing
- weeding
- spreading cover material
- harvesting and preserving
Harvesting and processing, etc. for household needs.
- Picking berries
- Making jam
- Fermentation
- Baking, making yogurt, dry herbs, make cheese etc.
Daily animal care like feeding the chickens and cows, watering, cleaning the cow stable.
Depending on the season we:
- plant trees
- Build fences
-. Split wood, paint, building maintenance and so on
If you are interested and a bit used to it, we are also in need of help with renovating and construction work.
We try to vary the tasks between/during the days with more independent tasks such as weeding, splitting wood, etc. and more creative tasks such as vegetable processing, canning, propagating plants in the forest garden, animal care.
Then we have three small children they are in need of quite a lot of our/my attention during the day. For us to have a good time togheter we think you need to be a person that both like kids and are comfortable working on your own, enjoying yourself from time to time.
As a woofer, you live in your own small trailer a.d. woodcutter's hut with 1 bunk bed, table/storage facilities and simple kitchenette with hob and fridge. There is electricity but no wifi. In the farmhouse it is possible to borrow a washing machine, shower, toilet (there is also an outhouse by the trailer). The trailer is simple but capable. You live in the trailer on your own (1 wwoofer at the time) if we dont come up with another decision togheter ). Usually we only have 1 wwoofer at the time but in summer we have room för 2.
You eat breakfast on your own. Then we have coffee, lunch, and dinner togheter. We are flexible and variations may occur. You help out with cook/cleaning from time to time.
We enjoy fishing and swimming in the nearest lake (10 km away..), we also like to camp out with the kids, outdoor cooking. We likes different types of hand craft for example knitting, wood- and leather work. There are several other home steaders in the area that we collaborates with and spend time with.
We enjoy living a life close to the seasons and be a part of the landscape and life around us. We are both drawn to an animistic world-view and we have a strong belief that we as a sociaty need a big change in our western culture and the economic system to be able to handle the environmental and climate problems.
You will be only about 20 km from national park Åsnen, where you can rent a canoe etc. we can provide you with tent and other hiking equipment. Its possible to borrow a car or a bike.
Do you long for a life where you take responsibility for your needs and the planet's? Are you planning or thinking about getting your own farm? Do you want to gain practical knowledge about how to produce your own food and building community?
Do you want to share your own skills, thoughts and experiences with others?
Then you might be the wwoofer for us! Please write us!
Obs- the closed dates 21-23 july you can still be on the farm but you take care of your own.
