Self-sufficiency amidst Swedish nature with Valais Blacknose sheep and chickens

wintertime is lambing/saving species season: help us save exceptional and important species in winter and spring while possibly attending the cutest miracle of life! We are looking for people to help us take care of our meadows between feb and april. We will cut down semi-invasive young trees and bushes in order to help important plants to survive (like oaks, different types of native flowers like orchids and grasses) all the while keeping patches of bushes and young trees for wildlife and birds. Since this kind of work is highly important but not so much fun we will have leisure activities and go on trips regularly to balance it. Lambing season starts in Feb and goes all the way into April
We (Gregor and Katharina) live on a farm in southern Sweden (30 minutes from the sea, very mild climate) and run a small, self-sufficient farm here. This includes a group of about 40 Valais blacknose sheep and mixed breeds for landscape management and also a small amount of meat production, Swedish flower chickens (eggs and meat) that can move freely, 4 small greenhouses, several small fields and a small fruit tree nursery.
The average day is highly seasonal. In autumn and winter we take care of the pastures, sometimes also harvesting wood, various construction projects and start growing vegetables in January. Field work begins in spring, we look after the young chickens and sheep and get everything up and running for the season. In summer we harvest, cook, replant and pull weeds. Overall, there are always construction projects, animals to look after and a lot to learn. In winter it is generally quieter, we work also outside of the farm, which means you have sufficient free time even if you are with us every time we work on the farm.
On the property there is a small cottage with 2 bedrooms (double bed and single bed), its own kitchen, bathroom and living room with a cozy fireplace. This means you can raid the fridge in the middle of the night or enjoy your morning coffee in peace and idyll. We mostly cook vegetarian food (meat or fish about once a week). We are therefore relatively flexible with meals, as long as it is okay with you if we eat meat/fish from time to time.
We are in the middle of "tourist" Småland, which means there are hiking trails, cycle paths, moose parks, endless excursion destinations (Astrid Lindgren World, museums, castle, various port cities and towns, smaller lakes but also cinema, restaurants/bars, flea markets) in the area from 1 h. If you come with your own car you'll have maximum flexibility of course but you are also invited to come with us when we drive somewhere f.ex.
Wir (Gregor und Katharina) leben auf einem Bauernhof in Südschweden (30 Minuten vom Meer entfernt, sehr mildes Klima) und betreiben hier eine kleine Landwirtschaft für die Selbstversorgung. Dazu gehört eine Gruppe Walliser Schwarznasenschafe sowie Mixe für die Landschaftspflege und auch im geringen Umfang Fleischgewinn, schwedische Blumenhühner (Eier und Fleisch), die sich frei bewegen können, 4 kleine Gewächshäuser, mehrere Beet/Ackerflächen und eine kleine Obstbaumschule.
Im Winter leben im Cottage, das dir zur Verfügung steht, auch 2 Katzen, die Liebe, Futter und Auslauf benötigen (und eine saubere Katzentoilette...).
Ich bin Tierarzt, Gregor ist der beste Handwerker, den ich jemals kennengelernt habe und wir geben dir gerne alles an Wissen weiter, was wir haben. Von Pflanzen über Tiere, Schafscheren und Wolle filzen.
Der durchschnittliche Tag ist stark saisonal geprägt. Im Herbst und Winter kümmern wir uns um die Weideflächen, teils auch Holzgewinn, um diverse Bauprojekte und beginnen im Jänner mit dem Anbau des Gemüses. Im Frühjahr beginnt die Feldarbeit, kümmern wir uns um die Jungtiere bei Hühnern und Schafen und bringen alles für die Saison in Betrieb. Im Sommer ernten wir, kochen ein, pflanzen nach, jäten Unkraut. Insgesamt gibt es immer Bauprojekte, irgendwelche Tiere, um die wir uns kümmern und viel zu lernen. Im Winter ist es allgemein ruhiger, insg arbeiten wir neben der Farm auch in anderen Jobs, somit bleibt ausreichend Freizeit für dich, selbst wenn du immer dabei bist.
Am Grundstück befindet sich ein kleines Cottage mit 2 Schlafzimmern (Doppelbett und Einzelbett), eigener Küche, Badezimmer und Wohnzimmer mit heimeligem Kamin. Du kannst somit auch mitten in der Nacht den Kühlschrank plündern oder deinen Morgenkaffee in Ruhe und Idylle zu genießen. Da wir eben auch in anderen Jobs arbeiten, kann es sein, dass du Mahlzeiten auch mal selbst kochen / aufwärmen musst, sie werden jedoch jedenfalls zur Verfügung gestellt.
Wir sind mitten im "touristischen" Småland, dh es gibt Wanderwege, Fahrradwege, Elchparks, Ausflugsziele ohne Ende (Astrid Lindgren Welt, Museen, Schloss, div. Hafenstädte und Orte, kleinere Seen aber auch Kino, Restaurants/Bars, Flohmärkte) im Umkreis von 1 h. Du hast natürlich Zugang zu schnellem Internet (Starlink), somit kannst du genauso Serien streamen wie arbeiten.

Katharinas und Gregors Bauernhof ist sehr interessant! Sie haben viele unterschiedliche Tiere und man kann von den beiden viel lernen. Wer sich für Veterinärmedizin interessiert, ist auf dem Hof gut aufgehoben. Beide reden viel und gerne. Das Haus ist schön, aber in den Wintermonaten sehr kalt! In der einen Woche hat es für uns gepasst, aber länger wäre es dann doch ungemütlich geworden. Man hat viel Freizeit, in der man die schöne Umgebung erkunden und die Pferde ausführen kann.

We stayed on the farm for two weeks in September and had an amazing time there!
We had our own cozy cottage with plenty of space.
Every day was different, but usually we had breakfast on our own and started working at around 8 o’clock. Most of the time, Katharina worked together with us. Our tasks included collecting vegetables from the greenhouses, weeding, repairing fences, caring for the fruit trees, and many other things.
At noon, we ate lunch together, and afterwards we had some free time. In the evening, we all had dinner together. The food was always delicious!
Katharina often told us interesting things about the farm and we learned a lot.

Katharina und Gregor haben uns offen empfangen und von Anfang an bei Aufgaben mitgenommen!
Wir haben über den Monat, denen wir bei ihnen verbracht haben, verschiedenste Aufgaben und Skills lernen können.
Von Erdbeerpflanzen pflanzen, Ernten, einkochen bis hin zu Zäune bauen, streichen und ganz viel Hunde, Katzen und Schafe streicheln kann man hier alles lernen.
Während den Aufgaben gab es immer ein schönes Arbeitsklima.. Gregor und Katharina haben immer gerne viel erzählt und auf alle meine unzähligen Fragen geantwortet!
Im Cottage mit den süßen Katzen lebt es sich super und zum Mittag und Abend haben wir alle 4 lecker zusammen gegessen.
Ausserhalb der Farm gab es Aktivitäten (Kalmar/Elchpark), die man gut mit dem Auto erreichen konnte.
Es war ein wunderschöner Aufenthalt bei Katharina und Gregor und ich kann es sehr empfehlen!

Katharina und Gregor haben eine schöne Farm mit süßen Tieren. Die Aufgaben waren abwechslungsreich
und nicht zu schwer. Vor allem das Ernten und Einkochen hat Spaß gemacht, aber auch alle anderen Aufgaben waren interessant und lehrreich. Die beiden wollten ihr
Wissen wirklich weitergeben und haben uns viel über die Tiere und übers Gärtnern beigebracht. Das
Cottage ist liebevoll eingerichtet-dort kann man sich nur wohlfühlen. Gregor hat super vegan gekocht, danke dafür!
Wir würden empfehlen, zu zweit zu kommen. Außerdem ist es nicht schlecht, einen Führerschein zu besitzen, um Kalmar und weitere Städte im Umland zu besichtigen.

I spent 3 weeks with Katharina and Gregor. The first week they were not on the farm, which was not a problem but a bit unusual. I spent my days weeding and feeding the animals. I had a lot of free time, so I also went on walks in the beautiful surrounding forest. After they were back, we had more work, but still less work as I'm used to having while WWOOFing. We prepared the greenhouses for the upcoming season, cared for the fruittrees and spent 2 days organizing a market. I really liked the market day, the farm was bustling with activity. We were really free in what we participated in, and I mostly worked in the garden/greenhouses. Since it's may, I planted lots of veggies, weeded, sowed new plants, threw out dead ones,... Other work was caring for the chickens, sheep and pigs, that was a daily routine. I loved cuddling with the sheep, more so with their lambs ! Spring is a really nice time to visit the farm, as there's a lot of babies. On the last day we slaughtered the pigs, which I was happy to witness, as I find it really interesting. Katharina also helped me a lot with the preparations for my hike that I was doing the week after their farm, which I am forever grateful for. I can definitely recommend this farm, the hosts were friendly, easygoing, funny and social, and they both cook really good!!

My three weeks at Katharina‘s and Gregor‘s farm flew by and were slowing down in the same time! I felt very welcome and enjoyed the delicious meals :) Except of the morning and evening routines I never really knew what the day would bring, but (and maybe because of it) it was always fun and varied. I am thankful for everything I learned (from plants and animals to building), for seeing the farm transforming every day and just being surrounded by people that love what they do! I am sure to come back in the future.
