My name is Jonna, I'm a part time teacher and experienced organic farmer with certificate in permaculture design, living with my partner Stefan who is a preservation architect. Our children have left home but we have a Norwegian Forest cat named Saskia and a rabbit called Cleo. Our home is a well-preserved old farmhouse at the west coast of Sweden near the Norwegian border. Since 2022 we open our garden to visitors on a small scale in the summer and sell our surplus of vegetables and organic grown cut flowers to the public. Our garden is a member of the Swedish Slow Flower organisation and of a regional digital garden visiting guide. We are right now in a process of expanding our activities with workshops and a guest house, and hopefully also a henhouse. As a WWOOFer her you will take part in all tasks in the vegetable and cut flower gardens. You will be able to learn about regenerative growing systems and permaculture and how to grow cut flowers as a "Slow Flower" farmer. The tasks will vary depending on season, seeding and planting in spring and harvesting in fall. WOOFers that have an interest in buildings preservation will be able to learn about that by helping Stefan with maintaining our buildings with traditional methods. You will live in a spacious and beautiful room on the second floor in our house, if you are a couple or two friends willing to share room it is very suitable but we also welcome single applicants. We will have dinner together most evenings, as a family. The other meals we can organize so that it suits everyone. Our family enjoy good food and all forms of cultural activities. For your free time you can reach both the Koster archipelago which is Sweden’s first marine National Park and the cities of Strömstad, Gothenburg, Halden and Oslo with public transportation. In the absolute vicinity you can walk in mountainous terrain or borrow a bike for hikes.

I spent 10 days with Stefan and Jonna on their self sufficient flower farm, and it was truly magical. I wouldn’t have changed a thing - their home was absolutely beautiful and they were incredibly warm and welcoming. I did tasks like organising wood sheds, picking flowers, weeding, potting new plants and foraging for mushrooms, and in the evenings we cooked delicious meals for eachother using vegetables from the garden. I even had some days off to go for swims and hikes! They are very special people and I’m sure I’ll be requesting a return visit soon.

My Wwoof stay with Jonna and Stefan was one of my first Wwoofing experiences and it couldn't have been better. From the very beginning, I felt very comfortable and welcome in their beautiful home. The work was very varied and ranged from planting, cutting flowers, mowing the lawn, stacking wood, weeding, picking vegetables, and tidying up in the shop. I also had a lot of fun cooking, baking, and making syrup together, and I learned a lot about Sweden. A special highlight was the beautiful garden, where I discovered new things everyday, as well as the nice conversations during dinner together. On days when I wasn't working, I also had the opportunity to go on trips, including to Norway and a beautiful island, which Jonna and Stefan helped me prepare and plan.

My time in Fjälla Trädgard was definitely the absolute highlight of my time in Sweden. I was very warmly welcomed into the family and learnt a lot!!!! My tasks were varied and included gardening, such as weeding of course, planting flowers and vegetables, building a compost heap, picking flowers for bouquets,... but also painting furniture and working with traditional colours. I was always able to ask questions and contribute my own ideas. Although there were no fixed working hours, it was always possible to take a rest or spent some time alone and the fika with homemade kanellbullar or ice cream in the afternoon were also very nice. Jonna and her family are also masterful cooks and the nettle pesto is simply amazing. We also made delicious rose water ourselves and I always got lots of great travel suggestions and tips on my days off. I will treasure everything I have experienced here forever. And I'm already looking forward to coming back someday!!! Thank you for having me (twice)

My stay with Jonna and her family was all that I hoped for - and more! They made me feel at home - with the lovely bedroom and other facilities in the house, to being clear in what was expected of me. Jonna worked with me and showed me the way she wanted things to be done with the garden work and trusted me to continue on my own - which I enjoyed. She also taught me about what and why we were doing different tasks and the natural cycles in Sweden - which are very different from what I am used to in South Africa. She was also very helpful prior to my trip to assist with travel arrangements and documents. I recommend staying and working with Jonna to all WWOOFers!
